Before there were sports drinks to rehydrate after exercise or sugary drinks designed to boost energy levels, there was Switchel, a homemade summer drink that’s experiencing a resurgence! Have you heard of Switchel?

3 Benefits of Switchel

Ease Inflammation

Is Switchel good for you? There are many ingredients in Switchel that are beneficial for the body. The first is ginger because it has the ability to reduce inflammation. Keeping inflammation at bay can have unexpected and welcomed benefits for symptoms that are caused by inflammation. Ginger is also a powerful pain fighter, digestive aid, and it’s great for removing accumulated toxins from the body.

Electrolytes

Electrolytes are nutrients or chemicals in the body that help it perform specific functions. They do things like regulate the heartbeat and tell your legs that it’s time to get moving. After undergoing intense exercise, eating a poor diet or even taking certain medications, an electrolyte imbalance can occur. Signs that electrolytes need some replenishing include constantly feeling thirsty, frequent headaches, fatigue, and nausea. Because of the maple syrup and apple cider vinegar found in Switchel, potassium-rich electrolytes are replenished, making it a nice alternative to sugary drinks like Gatorade.

By regularly drinking Switchel, you’ll get all the benefits of apple cider vinegar, including healing compounds, like potassium, magnesium, and probiotics.

Apple cider vinegar is one of my favorite natural remedies. It is wonderful as a liver and lymphatic tonic too.

One of the best sweeteners

If you’re using sweeteners, maple syrup is one of the best. When used in moderation, it’s a great alternative to cane sugar. Maple syrup affects blood sugar levels less than regular table sugar and includes trace antioxidants and minerals that regular sugar lacks.

Because maple syrup is made from tree sap, it’s also much less processed than refined cane sugar.

How to make Switchel

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

4 teaspoons apple cider vinegar

2 – 4 tablespoons of pure maple syrup to your taste

1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger; you can also add in extra slices

4 cups water or seltzer water

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients in a large jar with a lid.

Shake to combine.

You can pour it over ice or refrigerate it and let it steep for 12 to 24 hours.

Stir well before serving.

To make this Switchel extra refreshing, you can garnish it with sprigs of fresh mint, lemon wedges or berries.

If you decide to make it at home, I’d love to hear what you think!
